Home Office sexualisation review calls for improved regulation of lads' mags
Fri 26 Feb
Today the Home Office published its review on the sexualisation of young people with specific calls to introduce tougher regulation of lads' mags.
The report : REF specifically calls for 'lads' mags to be age-restricted or regulated in the same manner as magazines sold to teenage girls'. Teen girl magazines are regulated by the Teenage Magazine Abritration Panel (TMAP) whose codes are based on the understanding that the media 'plays an important role in the emotional, sexual etc development of ..' (get exact quotes !)
According to both the Institute of Education and the Kaisser Foundation some 2/3 of young people see the media as an 'important source of information about sex and relationships'; OFSTED's 2007 report on the PSHE specifically highlighted lads' mags as a sex educator for boys in the 11-16 age bracket, whilst the American Psychological Association's research underlines how the sexual objectification of women harms girls"
quote maybe from jeremy here " We are thrilled that this reveiw makes these recommendations - measures that have long been sought by OBJECT. Magazines that are clearly aimed at teen and even pre-teen boys for pocket money prices are indoctrinating boys in a culture of contempt for girls and women. Attitudes that they then take with them into the class room and which fuel the high levels of sexual bullying now prevalent in our schools. Attitidues they take with them into later life and fuel the extroardinary high levels of discrimination, harassment and violence that women and girls still face in Great Britain today".
We will be pushing hard for the Government to introduce these measures as soon as possible."
OBJECT Charter: Women and the Media
OBJECT is also urging politicians to consider the wider picture - the need for a socially responsible media. Our pre-election Charter (LINK) includes calls for policitians to:
- Committ to the need for a socailly responsible, gender aware meda which is independently regulated with binding codes as opposed to the voluntary, self-regulation that all media forms currently enjoy.
- Set in place a mechanism to achieve this.
Pyjama's vs Porn
To mark the publication of the review, pyjama-clad OBJECT protestors will gather outside regional Tescos. The protest raise awareness of fact that Tescos recently banned shoppers from wearing pyjams in their stores and yet sells both lads' mags and top shelf pornography, in some outlets. We will be polling shoppers, asking 'which would you rather see in your shop - pyjamas or porn?'
