Students OBJECT to Objectification

Women's Officers passed a motion at NUS Women's Conference in Coventry this month to add their support to OBJECT and the Stripping the Illusion Campaign. The motion also calls on NUS Women's campaign to help raise awareness about the harmful effects that the objectification of women and the mainstreaming of the porn and sex industries has on how women are viewed and treated in society.

The enthusiasm for challenging the pornification that we see all around us was clear in the lively workshops we ran at the Conference in conjunction with the SOAS Women's Officer, where we discussed strategies to develop grassroots feminist activism in universities to challenge sex object culture. It is an exciting time to be part of the growing student feminist movement with campaigns against the reintroduction of 1970s style sexist beauty pageants in universities mobilising women and men. OBJECT have been pleased to support these campaigns and to talk on panels at various universities around London and Leeds.

The student Miss-Ogynist protest outside the final of Miss University London was positive, fun and lively with singing, dancing and chants calling for an end to the objectification of women and an end to sexism.
